Positive Change

By Ryan

Things are finally settling down for KDice. Let’s run through it’s history for 2008.

In January KDice underwent a major revision that changed the architecture on the server. This meant that a single server could support many more players and could restore the functionality of the other website features such as stats, the forum, and ideas. There were a few bumps getting into the new system but they have been smoothed out.

In February KDice introduced correlation detection. The KDice server keeps track of who people play and if it finds two people playing together and helping each other win too much then it restricts these two people from playing.  It was experimental but turned out to work well. Less than 1% of players were detected helping stop abusive players. The detection is a great addition and will stay on thte KDice server.

Now it’s March. I’ve quietly added the ability to link your KDice account to your facebook account. You can have stats on your Facebook page and see facebook friends listed in the favorite players section. I’ve also rolled out some smaller changes.

  • The detailed stats in the interface are hidden by default in an effort to simplify information for new players. Hovering a mouse over a player will reveal their stats. Alternatively you can click options->details to force the details to always display.
  • You can now use Ctrl+ to hide dice if you need to see how territories connect.
  • Some bug fixes for flagging.

Thanks for playing and remember to contribute ideas to the ideas section.

Would it be easy to change the key combo for the dice hiding? CTRL + is text size increase in Firefox, and if you do it without clicking in the Flash app first, it quickly makes the screen unreadable. I was just in a game where a player was out for several rounds because of this issue.

It’s a great feature to have, though! Thanks!

The blog is a great addition to this site. Since the forum has no search feature and the threads are not too well organised, it was a pain to find updates which were made in the past. Now the blog lists all important updates which were made in each month and allows players who have not logged in for a few months (like me before march) to find out exactly what has been changed about the game. I always like to be informed about new updates to any game and I am therefore really happy this blog was created – and I guess I’m not the only one. Keep it up!

Btw, thanks for including the feature of pressing ctrl to hide the dice because sometimes it was really hard to see exactly whether two territories connected or not.

    One more thing:
I noticed that once a player flags, the flag can now disappear, e.g. when the player is attacked… was that included in the bug fixes for flagging or is that a new bug?
